Japanese gardens could be classified in various ways, such as from the course of historical changes, from the presentation style, or from the purpose of the garden’s creation. Today what are popularly known and appreciated as Japanese gardens include Zen gardens, tea roji (accesses to tea houses), tsuboniwa (small gardens at private houses), and relatively large-scale kaiyu-shiki (stroll-style) gardens. A pond, an island, a stream, a stone and a stone lantern are the most important components of the Japanese gardens.
