  Ginza [ TOKYO ]

Ginza Image

Ginza is not the name of a street, but that of a section of the city. It covers a vast area surrounding the intersection of Chuo-dori and Harumi-dori. “Gin” means silver and “za” refers to a guild, or an association, of licensed craftsmen. This was the area of the city assigned to a group of silversmiths between the 17thand 19thcenturies. There was also a mint here where silver coins were made. Today, The Ginza area is one of the most fashionable shopping places in Japan. Kabukiza is known as a theater where the classical Japanese drama called Kabuki is staged throughout the year.
