The Imperial palace [ TOKYO ]

The Imperial palace Image

The city of Tokyo grew around the present Imperial Palace, which was once called Edo Castle, the largest feudal castle in Japan. From the beginning of the 17th century to 1867, the castle was the headquarters of the Tokugawa Shogunate and served as the administrative center of Japan. Some buildings, gates, stone walls, and moats remain from that time, and the area is designated a Special Historic Site. Since the Meiji Restoration of the 1868 the Imperial Family has lived on the 115ha (284ac) grounds of Nijubashi, or “the Double-bridge” which is the main entrance to the palace. Unfortunately, most of the gorgeous wooden structures of the previous palace, completed in 1888, were destroyed in an air raid on May 25, 1945.
