Sorakuen Garden is located at the western hilly area of the city, is a stroll-through type of the landscape garden of 1.9ha owned by the city. Mr. kodera Taijiro, a wealthy man in the Kansai district, started constructing it in 1885 and completed it in the early 1910s. He donated the whole estate to the city government in 1941, when it was officially named Sorakuen Garden. At present the garden contains such historic buildings as Hassam’s House and the Funayakata, which used to be a houseboat owned by the daimyo of Himeiji. Growing in the garden are many aged sago palms (Cycas revoluta) and camphor trees (Cinnamomum camphora).
