Nara Park is popularly called the “Deer Park” by foreigners because of its large deer population. This park is the largest of its kind in Japan, covering an area of 502ha. It is a natural woodland of fine turf and has various kinds of trees such as Sugi (Japanese cedar), Fuji (Japanese wisteria), Asebi (Japanese andromeda), and Ichiigashi (Quercus gilva). There are about 1,200 tame deer roaming about the park. They are regarded as the divine messengers of Kasugataisha Shrine and are one of the main attractions of Nara.
