The present Kaiyukan was constructed on a 4ha (9.8ac) site adjacent to the Tempozan Passenger Terminal in Osaka Port. The facility was opened to the public on July 20, 1990. Its construction was financed by both the public and private sectors at a cost of \28.5 million. Everything, from the aquarium’s organizing concept to the actual physical layout of the exhibits, is designed to suggest the interdependency of all forms of life, and the mankind is a small part of the total life system on earth. The natural environments of various regions of the Pacific Ocean have been re-created so that visitors can enjoy seeing creatures living in their natural habitats. The Osaka Aquarium has successfully realized the dream of re-creating the world of Pacific Ocean, to remind us once again of the beauty and grandeur of nature.
